‘Baahubali’ Forays into Licensing with ‘Black White Orange’

The brand is targeting 20-25 crore of retail sales alone from their merchandising & licensing revenue

Black White Orange Brands Pvt. Ltd, the young licensing and merchandising solutions agency, has been appointed as the Global Licensing Agent by Arka Mediaworks Entertainment LLP for their National Award winning movie Baahubali. The much awaited part 2, Baahubali – The Conclusion hits screens worldwide in April 2017.

With an aim to create a ‘Baahubali brand experience’, Black White Orange will work closely with Arka Mediaworks to conceptualize designs, represent the Baahubali franchise across a wide range of categories and also look at several licensing and retail partnerships, globally. Having already signed on a spate of leading international names like Paramount Pictures, Game of Thrones, Universal Pictures etc. till date, Black White Orange make their first Bollywood brand foray with Arka Mediaworks and their popular franchise –  Baahubali.

‘Baahubali: The Beginning’ released in July 2015 in India and Indian diaspora territories has grossed a massive $92 million. It is also the 2nd highest grossing Indian movie globally! Backed by larger than life sets, VFX and a huge star cast, the top trending #WhyDidKatappaKillBaahubali took audiences by storm last year. The merchandise partnership between the two companies will showcase the film’s potential in the form of exciting collaborations & authentic licensed products such as apparel, stationery, novelty, home décor, innovative non-traditional categories and more!

The singer will design a capsule collection dubbed Zayn x Versus, which will feature menswear and womenswear.

Working in close collaboration with Donatella Versace, the range will drop in May 2017, and will be available from Versus stores worldwide and online.

Malik revealed that, “I think Versus has always been a very cool brand. It’s a great brand for me and for people in my generation. I’ve always wanted to design clothes, and there’s no brand I’d rather design for than Versus. The bonus is that I get to collaborate with Donatella, whom I love and admire. I know we’ll create something amazing.”

Versace was similarly complimentary of her latest collaborator, calling the singer, “one of the most exciting personalities on the world stage right now”.

Sony Pictures teams up with Penguin for Peter Rabbit Movie licensing programme

Sony Pictures has teamed with Penguin Ventures to develop a licensing and consumer products programme for the upcoming Peter Rabbit movie

Sony Pictures Entertainment is launching a worldwide licensing campaign that will include representation from Penguin Ventures across the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

The programme will be developed around the upcoming live-action and CG animated Peter Rabbit movie, based on the hit series from Beatrix Potter.

Jamie Stevens, EVP Worldwide Consumer Products Sony Pictures Entertainment, said: “We are excited about the creative direction of the film as it will open up many new opportunities to create a fresh and compelling licensing programme that will bring to life the world of Peter Rabbit like never before.

“We look forward to collaborating with Penguin Ventures on a worldwide campaign to engage a whole new audience.”

Mattel Expands Presence in South Korea

Company Forges Strategic Relationships with Leading Korean Toy Companies

Strengthening its presence in key geographies throughout Asia, Mattel, Inc. today announced that it has finalized strategic relationships with Choirock Contents Factory, Co., Ltd. and Sonokong Co, Ltd., two of Korea’s most successful and established toy industry leaders.

Under the terms of an agreement with Choirock, Mattel will serve as master toy licensee for the hugely popular Turning Mecard franchise, currently the number one toy franchise in South Korea by sales1. Under the terms of the deal, Mattel will manufacture, distribute and market a wide variety of toys and products inspired by the franchise, including vehicles, action figures, games and other items. Choirock will continue to distribute and manage the Turning Mecard franchise in Korea, while Mattel will hold the right to introduce the franchise in markets throughout the world.

Separately, Mattel and Sonokong have entered into a strategic agreement in which Sonokong will serve as Mattel’s primary distribution partner in South Korea, with responsibility for sales and product distribution. The agreement applies to Mattel’s entire product portfolio, excluding games. Mattel has also entered into a definitive agreement to acquire a 12% equity stake in Sonokong, a publicly-traded company listed on the Korea Exchange (KRX). The transaction is expected to be completed later this month.

“Today’s announcements represent a tremendous step forward in Mattel’s presence in South Korea, a key Asian market with ample consumer demand for toys and related products,” said Peter Broegger, Managing Director, Mattel Asia Pacific.

Baseline named as licensing agent for Liverpool

Sports marketing firm Baseline Ventures has been appointed as the exclusive licensing agency of the Premier League football club Liverpool across three countries—India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

The Premier League is the world’s richest club-level competition in football, attracting the best players from across the globe to play for such storied teams as Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool and last year’s champions, Leicester FC.

The four-year deal will allow Baseline ventures to sell official Liverpool merchandise including apparel, footwear, stationery products and mobile phone covers, among other things, in the three countries. The deal was signed on Thursday.

The company said it expected to earn $ 4-5 million as licensing revenue by the end of 2017.

“We will handle both product and promotional licensing for Liverpool across categories. Currently, Liverpool has a fan base of more than 75 million in India. We will strive hard to grow LFC’s (Liverpool Football Club) licensing business in India and look forward to a mutually beneficial relationship,” said Tuhin Mishra, managing director and co-founder at Baseline Ventures.

Mishra further added that the company will tie up with retailers in India and leverage their distribution channels to sell branded Liverpool products. “We will be selling the merchandise through both offline and online channels,” he said.

Mattel to bring in two new Barbie Animated Series

Two new animated Barbie series, a Barbie special, an original one-hour special entitled Enchantimals and a live-action competition series called The Toy Box have all been greenlit by Mattel Creations

In line with the new division’s plan to broaden the global audience for Barbie, the first new Barbie series, Barbie Dreamtopia, targets younger preschool viewers, while the second, Barbie: Dreamhouse Adventures, is a CGI sitcom goes after kids ages five to 11.

Barbie Dreamtopia builds on the success of Mattel’s CGI-animated TV movie of the same name which premiered this spring and has since sold to broadcasters including Cartoon Network (LatAm), Super RTL (Germany), Pop TV (UK), MiniMini (Poland), Karusel (Russia) and Media Prima (Malaysia).

Featuring animation from Tel Aviv, Israel-headquartered Snowball Studios, and Barbie Dreamtopia follows the journey of Barbie’s youngest sister, Chelsea, who travels with her big sis from their CGI-animated world to a fantastical 2D-animated land known as Dreamtopia.

Another new special, Enchantimals, is also set for a 2017 release. The nature-based project centers on the adventures had in the forest by a group of friends with extraordinary animal abilities.

Rounding out the new slate, Mattel Creations has greenlit The Toy Box, an all-ages competition-based series featuring toy inventors, a kids jury and host Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family).

Co-developed with Hudsun Media and Electus, the series is set to bow sometime during ABC Television Network’s 2016-17 season, and will be distributed internationally by Electus International.

Mattel will present all of the new content at MIPCOM next week, along with season 21 of Thomas & Friends, 70-minute movie Thomas: Journey BeyondSodor, season one of American Girl-based animated series WellieWishers, twoMax Steel specials and 70-minute movie Monster High: Electrified.

UBM, LIMA and Alifish Join Forces to Strengthen Chinese Licensing Market

Nickelodeon, Viacom partners food product licensees

Nickelodeon and Viacom Consumer Products has partnered with a raft of licensees to develop branded food and drink products across the EMEA region and Asia for the Nickelodeon’s host of properties

First, NVCP has secured a multi-territory deal with Dairy4Fun for a branded range of yogurts, milk-snacks and desserts and will feature “SpongeBob SquarePants,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” “Paw Patrol” and “Blaze and the Monster Machines.” The new products will launch at high-street supermarkets across Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovak Republic, Slovenia and Spain.

Vitapress has launched its first range of “Paw Patrol”-branded fizzy juice drinks. The products are now available in the U.K., Hungary, Czech Republic, Romania and Slovakia.

Meanwhile, Ustronianka has released a range of “SpongeBob SquarePants” Grapcio fruit smoothies in Poland.

Next, NVCP has expanded its partnership with Ideafruit to distribute a “SpongeBob”-branded range of apples across Malaysia and Singapore. The range will also complement the existing range of fresh product in South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawai, Mozambique, Mauritius, Namibia, Nigeria, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Roter has released a range of “Dora the Explorer” chewable vitamin tablets across a host of drugstores and supermarkets.

Finally, Delicia has released an assortment of chocolate sprinkles featuring “Dora the Explorer,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and “Paw Patrol” across Belgium and the Netherlands.

UBM’s Licensing Group Launches Licensing Expo China in 2017

 UBM, US and Asia’s largest business-to-business events and trade show organizer, will bring a licensing expo to Shanghai, China in 2017. Licensing Expo China will be open on 18-20 July 2017 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (NECC), Shanghai, China.

Licensing Expo China will feature over 100 brands and properties from China and overseas. The show will connect the most influential entertainment, character, fashion, art and corporate brand owners and agents with consumer goods manufacturers, licensees and retailers from all product categories across Asia.

In a recent survey, China was identified by our customers as the number one market that they are looking to for growth. Cartoon Network partners SBS for Robot Chicken Merch

Cartoon Network Enterprises, in partnership with Stoopid Buddy Stoodios(SBS), has tapped ReedPOP to launch a series of products featuring the Adult Swim series “Robot Chicken.”

The new range will include apparel, barware, pins, plush toys, keychains and more.

Brandberry brokered the deal.

“Seth and I have been attending the ReedPOP conventions since the outset and we love playing with them,” says Matt Senreich, co-founder, SBS. “This was a perfect next step in our beautiful relationship as creatively they get our brand perfectly.”

The new “Robot Chicken” merchandise launched last weekend at the 2016 New York Comic Con and will be available online after the convention. The entire collection will be sold at various conventions, online and at select retailers.

“Robot Chicken” is an Emmy Award-winning stop motion sketch comedy series that airs on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim.  The team behind the series is currently in production on a new special based on “The Walking Dead,” which will premiere in 2017.
